Revenue and Customs scam emails
We’ve been receiving a number of scam emails purporting to come from Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs.
There have been two major campaigns:
“Notice of Under-reported income” which says that there’s been a discrepancy in your tax payments and the fraud department are investigating. It asks you to visit a link which WILL install a virus on your PC.
*Editor’s note 20/01/10- I received a phone call this afternoon from someone to tell me that her dearest other half had clicked on the link in this email and had to remove in the region of 36 trojan viruses from his PC, costing hours of time, effort, frustration and not an inconsiderable amount of earache from his good lady wife….*
“Rebate Due” which tells you that you’re due a tax refund and asks you to visit a link to enter your debit card details to receive it direct into your account. This is a phishing email to get your debit card details and the fraudsters WILL steal your money.
Remember that HMRC do not communicate with taxpayers in this way, and would never ask you to complete an online form to receive a tax rebate. They would also never send you an email asking for personal details.
DO NOT click on the links and delete the email immediately.
